Hello from Sophie and Maria, the new owners of the St Denys in York

Well, it's been a pretty hectic few weeks since we took over at the St Denys, with the summer holidays and Ebor races in full swing... Call us crazy, but it is so exciting to finally be here and to be getting some of our plans in motion (watch out for more updates soon).

Meanwhile we have been getting to know this beautiful old building (built in Victorian times as the rectory for the stunning, Grade I listed St Denys Church just over the road) and we are falling for it a bit more every day. We are also really enjoying living in this vibrant corner of York and have even managed to find time to pop into a couple of the many excellent cafes and restaurants that are a stone's throw from the door.

We thought we should write a bit of an introduction to us, although it always feels a bit strange writing about yourself! Anyway, here goes: We are two sisters who grew up just south of York, going to school in one of the suburbs. After school, Sophie started off with a degree in business management and a plan to run her own business one day, while Maria completed a PhD in cell biology with her childhood longings to run a bed & breakfast on the back burner. Sophie went on to develop a career in hospitality management and property development. When Maria had completed her PhD, Sophie recruited her to help re-launch a luxury hotel and a plan to start our own business was born.... Maria went off to get more experience and we have now worked in the 4 and 5 star hospitality industry for about a decade combined, both here in York and further afield in Western Scotland and even as far away as Argentina. Now our paths have crossed again and we are excited to have launched our first joint venture. As we grew up in York, it made sense to start a business in the city we know and love. We both love good hospitality and are very excited to be part of a new chapter at the St Denys and hope you will like the improvements we are planning.
